Iglesia San Francisco, Salta

4.7
#2 of 14 in Historic Sites in Salta
Terracotta tiles, ivory columns, and gold trimming combine to make the stunning facade of Iglesia San Francisco, Salta's most distinctive landmark. Admire the combination of European architecture and indigenous influence, which explains the church's bright, unusual exterior colors. Make sure you take a good look at the intricate frescoes adorning the church's walls and ceiling, as you can't take photos of the interior. Once you've finished admiring the church, take a stroll through the attached gardens, where you can take a few snaps. The church forms part of a functioning nunnery, which occasionally limits visiting hours. • Two guided tours are offered that cost $150 each. The historical visit includes the tour of some passageways, rooms describing Franciscan missions and the disused workshops of the friars. The other visit, that of the bell, consists of the ascent by a staircase of 109 steps where you can see the bell of the homeland (melted with the weapons of the Battle of Salta) and limited views of the city of Salta. On the day of the visit to all tourists we were taken to a library to participate in a tribute for Writer's Day and an act of donation of books from a journalist. This included listening to the poetry and recorded reflections of a friar. All this is of relative interest, since the most important thing of the Church of San Francisco is the church itself that is not covered by either of the two guided tours. In addition, the guide was tired and moody by questions about things he had already explained in a monotonous tone. They could ignore the tiredness and moodiness of the guide, leave posters with explanations and allow the visitor to walk and enjoy the place without feeling like a student of a Catholic school. Recommendation: save the $300 and focus on the church.

  • It's beautiful both inside and out. Beyond the religious, it is to admire every detail, every figure, every altar.

  • Beautiful church. The lighting at night makes it look even more magical!
  • Really nice church, especially seen from the outside.
