Trip Planner: South America / Argentina / Patagonia / Province of Tierra del Fuego / Ushuaia / Estancia Harberton
A stop at family-owned Estancia Harberton allows you to learn about local plant and animal life, as well as easily access a nearby island where you can walk with penguins. Stroll through the gardens and down the hill to see replicas of two types of native wigwam, a shearing shed, a carpenter shop, and a boathouse. The tour ends in the family garden featuring 19th-century terraces and a tearoom with posters illustrating the area's wildlife, native groups, and the estate's history. The nearby marine museum features a collection of skeletons of over 2,700 marine mammals and 2,300 birds. Amenities include a camp on the grounds and a remodeled cookhouse with rooms for overnight stay. We sailed the Beagle Channel, visited the island of wolves, saw the lighthouse, the island of birds and magellanic penguins on Hammer Island, then arrived at the room where we stayed almost 3 hours and then returned by micro. It belongs to the fourth generation of the family, being the oldest in the city, since its construction is from 1886. Its original owner was Thomas Bridges, author of the Yaman a language dictionary, native villages that inhabited the area. In the center of the city we visited the museum and saw its culture and way of life, but today we were told it had closed. The stay has a restaurant and a very interesting maritime museum. The full walk is worth it, I would not just visit this place.
