Ascend Chacaltaya, an impressive mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the main ranges in the Bolivian Andes. With an elevation of 5,421 m (17,785 ft), the towering peak offers a challenge for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. Head up the mountain road, enjoying extensive views of the range as you curl up the mountain. Home to what was once the highest ski area in the world--now abandoned, with the affects of global warming reducing the skiable area over the years--and an observatory, the mountain road offers a good route into the area for amateur mountaineers, as the walk from the road to the summit is relatively short.     To the mountain leds a serpentine road from Lapaz. Driving is dangerous and you feel you will fall into the gorge every moment. As an adrenaline-loving person, I really liked it. The remaining meters....  more »

    Chacaltaya is approx 2 hours out of La Paz and the mountain peaks at 5400m altitude. I booked a tour through HanaqPacha and was very happy with it. They pick you up from your hotel then drive you up.....  more »

    Beautiful views. The summit is just over 5300m. You will feel like you are on the top of the world. The mountain is reached via a 1 hour drive along a very narrow, bumpy, single-lane road, stopping close to the top. It’s then a short 15 minute walk to the summit.

    I liked it because you could drive most of the way there or you can choose to Trek from as low a starting point as you want and it's easy to follow the road all the way up. It is quite high so be prepared for a headache if you've not acclimatised. The drive from La Paz is about 40 minutes and there's lots of providers in the tour agencies and hostels. Offers great views of Huayna Potosi as well as illimani and near the horizon you can make out nevado sajama, parinacota and lake Titicaca
