Occupying three floors of an eclectic, postmodern building known as the 'Queen of Junk,' Mineralogy Museum's collection consists of nearly 3,000 specimens of minerals, rocks, ores, gems, fossils and meteorites. With 80% of the samples coming from mining land, the museum's purpose is to highlight the historical, economic and cultural importance of national and international mining in the state of Minas Gerais. In addition to the permanent collection, you will find the Djalma Guimarães Memorial Room, a collection of personal artifacts and research belonging to the Brazilian geoscience pioneer, and an auditorium that is used for a variety of educational purposes, from lectures to film screenings. The museum's collection consists of about 3,000 pieces between rare rocks and gems and high economic value. At the entrance to the Mining Museum is quartz considered one of the largest in the world and called patriarch. Originally the building housed the Tancredo Neves Tourist Support Center and Turminas. The museum is part of the Freedom Square Tourist Circuit.
