Castelinho Caracol, Canela

Castelinho Caracol, built by German immigrants Pedro Carlos Franzen and Luiza Sommer between the years of 1913 and 1915, was one of the first residences in the Town of Canela. The charming "little castle" was made with such craftsmenship, that it still stands 100 years later, despite being made of wood. Today the castle is a museum, with authentic furnishings and utensils, where you can experience the life of an early 20th century German immigrant. Enjoy the 180 degree vista of the green countryside from the castle's small tower, and explore the surrounding park, including the native wood, the house used by the family before the little castle had been finished, the saw mill where Pedro Franzen used to work, the storage sheds, and a warehouse. Make sure you try "the best Apfelstrudel in Brazil." PutCastelinho Caracol into our Canela road trip tool and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Eat and walk around, don't miss the bucolic view
  • It has a nice sight seeing but that's all. The apple strudel is shameful and poorly prepared. The hot chocolate they serve is nothing more than a terrible quality Nescau alike...and the variety simply doesn't exist. To add insult to injury they only take cash, not bothering to make this clear until you are on your way to the cashier. Do not recommend it.
