Capela de Sao Pedro, Fernando de Noronha

#10 of 90 in Historic Sites in State of Pernambuco
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
See the vast expanse of water below Capela de Sao Pedro, a cliff top chapel at the foot of a mountain. Tiny, simple, and isolated on the top of a hill overlooking the ocean, this no-frills church has a large cross erected next to it and offers superb views of the sea. Built in the 1930s by the French, the structure includes carved wooden entrance doors and a bell in the front facade. Due to the scenery, many opt to have their wedding here. On Saint Peter's Day (July 29), a procession from the nearby town comes to the top of the hill for an outdoor mass celebrating the protector of fishermen.
