Palmares

4.2
The city of Palmares began as one of a collection of ex-slave communities led by the great rebel slave leader Zumbi dos Palmares. The name of the city was actually given to the region by the Portuguese because of the high concentration of palm trees, Zumbi only acquired it after assembling runaway slaves there in hidden communities. These communities remained secret and operated as an autonomous state from 1604 to 1694, nowadays they are small towns that welcome curious visitors. In Palmares, you will find a monument to Zumbi in the town's center near vividly painted colonial buildings, cobbled streets, and of course palm trees. Even with this rich background, the city has only grown to just over 58,000 inhabitants, due in part to the flooding of the Una River.   Palmares is in State of Pernambuco (PE).
