Rich in architectural sights and natural attractions, the city of Pelotas is the third-largest in the state, and enjoys an attractive position by the Lagoa dos Patos. The town grew from its colonial roots thanks to a strong agricultural economy, with the relatively flat land of the areas close to local water sources being fertile and strategically placed for trade. The wealth accrued was reinvested into what are now some of Pelotas's main attractions: its historic buildings. Cultural exhibits now fill many of the old colonial-era buildings, with local museums, galleries, and performance spaces located within the Baroque landmarks.
