For a taste of Jewish history and culture visit Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas, built in the mid-17th century. It was the opening of this synagogue that made the Jewish community’s migration to New York possible. The charming architecture of the building itself serves as a nice contradiction to the surrounding buildings. View the collection of photos and personal documents of the Jews who lived in Recife. • Really interesting place to learn more about the story of the Jewish Street, currently Bom Jesus Street, the story of the Jewish who lived here and the history of Pernambuco itself. There are documents and banners from early 20th century. Artifacts found during excavations, very interesting stuff. Entrance tickets go for around 20 reais.
