Instituto Moreira Salles, Rio de Janeiro

4.8
Tucked away in a residential neighborhood of Rio is Instituto Moreira Salles, a place that not even the locals know about. A magnificent modernist banker's house turned into the namesake cultural center, it is now a temple dedicated to art and culture. The home itself portrays the brilliant 1950’s architecture of Oscar Neimeyer and the garden designed by the maestro landscaper, Roberto Burle Marx. The art collection is great and there is a famous collection of recordings and photos from Rio in the 30s. The store sells a small selection of the prints, along with books, totebags, and t-shirts. The restaurant provides various meals at great prices. The center provides information panels both in Portuguese and English. Instituto Moreira Salles is truly a perfect cultural and tranquil getaway from the city. • Location with art exhibitions and in a rich and welcoming environment. Located at the base of the Tijuca forest and surrounded by green. It has a café serving small snacks. Very well maintained and preserved gardens. A delight for a late afternoon coffee.

  • Excellent place to visit. Besides being in a beautiful and arbaorized environment does not charge parking entrance of the exhibitions. There is a café that also has a few lunch options, with a medium to high price. It's not cheap. In the external area, depending on the temperature and time it may be convenient to carry repellent.

  • Great free museum that is well organized and curated. Beautiful location to explore and sit at the cafe even if you aren't exploring the exhibits. My personal favorite in terms of museums in Rio.
  • Amazing mansion turned into an art gallery. I was particularly impressed with the choice of displaying Seydou Keita photography. This was a very interesting visit that turned into a relax in the cafe sorrounded by lush greenery and unique architecture.
