Trip Planner: South America / Brazil / State of Rio de Janeiro / Rio de Janeiro / Museu Nacional De Belas Artes
Although Museu Nacional De Belas Artes wasn’t inaugurated until the 1930s, its primarily collection dates back to the early 19th century when King John VI transferred part of the royal collection from Portugal. The museum now houses more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints that follow the art history of Brazil and of the Portuguese colonials. The building is also home to the National School of Fine Arts, which looks after the valuable artwork hanging on its walls while still using it as a tool for students. Sunning museum filled with world renowned pieces of fine arts from around the world but with a focus towards highlighting local Brazilian artists who have gained prominence in the recent years. An absolutely extensive collection with art from many different eras and time periods, from 3d sculptures, to modern art selections, to traditional oil paintings. The facilities are relatively modest and only some exhibits have air conditioning which is a great relief if you need a break from the hot Brazilian summers. Restrooms are not clearly marked or easy to navigate but are adequate. Admission price is unbeatable at a price of absolutely free although you do have to store any bags at the coat check. Some special exhibits also require lines and long waits. Waited almost 45 minutes for a special exhibit only to not be very impressed at the small gallery inside.
Many interesting items hanging in the galleries. The information provided about the exhibits was great and simple for us foreigners to understand. Poor signing for things like water fountains, toilets, leaving luggage which was critical. Being told by the guard in the front foyer, that taking photos of the tile design in the floor was not allowed!!! We enjoyed the Francis of Assisi very much.
