Praia de Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

4.6
#2 of 4,653 in Outdoors in Brazil
A long stretch of warm sand, Praia de Ipanema is divided into segments by posts ("postos," as they’re known locally), which mark diverse lifestyles and interests of beachgoers from around the world. Posto 9 attracts visitors intent on spending the day leisurely relaxing on the sand, while Posto 10 draws sports lovers with ongoing volleyball, soccer, and footvolley games. Food kiosks stay open all day long, with beer and the traditional cachaça sold right on the water’s edge. Constant swells keep the water clean all year round, with a frequent strong undertow and oversized waves. Always be careful on this beach, and swim only where the locals do. Remember that on the weekends the sand does get very crowded, so go early to stake a good spot. • Beautiful beach with beautiful Brazilian people. Their winter is LA's spring. Loved this clean beach with bodies being shown off since everyone seems to be healthy and fit. You can buy fresh coconut to homemade alcohol that is made from sugar cane. Vendors also sell jewelry, bathing suits, typical Brazilian food, and drinks on a platter. You can pretty much find the beaches with people laying out, playing soccer, or fresco ball, solo or with friends and family. I loved the clear aqua waters and soft sand. I finally made it to Rio and Ioanema was everything and more I was hoping for!
  • Nice. Go to the elevated level to take pictures. But do it in the daytime. You never know who might be lurking behind a bush on on the hill in the evening. Not that I have seen it. But knowing how unsafe they say the city can be...That's a place it can "go down". Me and my Adidas :)
