Pelourinho, Salvador

3.7
A stroll through the historic Colonial district, Pelourinho brings you past brightly colored Renaissance buildings decorated with fine stucco work. This district has an extreme wealth of historical monuments dating back to the 17th through 19th centuries. Nicknamed "Pelô" by residents, this old part of the upper city encompasses several blocks around a triangular Largo. The large open-air market offers artistic and cultural souvenirs, as well as churches, museums, and shops housed in pastel-colored buildings. You'll find decadent restaurants and cafés and a lively local music scene with a bustling nightlife. Percussion musicians play drums in the streets including the areas signature berimbaus, which you can buy in several of the surrounding shops. • Imperdivel place and that portrays the history of slavery. Revitalized but could be in better condition because there are still several houses in need of a restoration (which only shows the neglect of our rulers in preserving our history). Zombie represented and conceived by the sculpture of a plastic artist updates what slavery was in our country.

  • Vendors don't stop harassing. Bad security. Place to deceive tourists. Sad, but it represents well the local culture...
