  • The Teatro de Arena Eugênio Kusnet was inaugurated in 1955 by José Renato, actor and director formed by the School of Dramatic Art. The following year, a partnership with the Teatro Paulista do Estudante resulted in the creation of the stable cast of arena theater, formed by Vera Gertel, Alzira Mattar, Méa Marques, Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, Raul Cortez, Floramy Pinheiro, Marina Freire, Luiz Eugênio Barcelos, Nelo Pinheiro and Fausto Fuser. In the same year, José Renato asked Sábato Magaldi to nominate a new director for the Arena Theater. The critic suggested Augusto Boal, who would become one of the most important Brazilian directors. In 1958, the Arena Theatre specializes in assembling national works, as They do not use black-tie, by Guarnieri, and political criticism becomes a striking feature of the shows. With the military coup of 1964, the theater is struggling and many of its members are arrested and exiled. Despite the political situation, Arena conta Zumbi, by Guarnieri and Boal, debuts in 1965, opening a new phase, that of musicals. With the decree of Institutional Act No. 5, it becomes more difficult to maintain the activities of the theater and its members participate in international tours. In 1971, Augusto Boal was arrested. A year later, the Arena Theatre is closed. Already in 1977, the National Theater Service (SNT) acquires the property, which is now called Teatro de Arena Eugênio Kusnet. With the merger of this organ with Funarte in the 1990s, the theater began to be administered by the foundation.

  • How beautiful to know that great professionals started here. I watched a wonderful play that counted all shakespeare's deaths. Places like this had to be more valued by the public and pieces like this should fill and exhaust tickets!!!
