Liberdade, Sao Paulo

4.2
#2 of 15 in Neighborhoods in State of Sao Paulo
Instead of Chinatown, in Sao Paulo there’s Japantown, locally called Liberdade. This part of town is the world’s largest Japanese community outside of Japan. The district includes a significant population of Chinese and Koreans, and features numerous Asian shops, markets, bars, and restaurants. The area is also noted for housing the Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil, narrating the story of the first Japanese settlers who came to work on the region’s sprawling coffee plantations. Be sure to stop by the iconic entrance into the district, which offers a convenient photo opportunity with its tall red torii, a Japanese arch usually marking entrances into Shinto temples. • I went to the Liberty Neighborhood on a Saturday morning and found a great walk option. Initially, to get there, the subway is a great option because the exit of Japan Liberdade station is in a square in the main center of the neighborhood. I really enjoyed the 89th coffee shop, also near the subway exit, across the street. Good alternative to have breakfast and meet Japanese sweets or made with Oriental products. The fair that takes place on weekends offers numerous options of typical foods and handicrafts. I ate an Oriental Bowl in one of the stalls that was very good and the relatively long queue compared to that of the other stalls. It also has pastel of various flavors, originally Japanese foods, a multitude of options. There are numerous cool shops nearby, grocery stores with imported products, finally, I liked it very much and I want to come back with more time to get to know more about the neighborhood.

  • Every time we go to SP I give a stop in Freedom. It's my favorite neighborhood. On weekends there are craft fairs and cultural presentations. Go for the food, go through the museum, go through the shops, but go! Who goes the first time notices the dry service of some Orientals, but we end up getting used to it.
