Modernist House, Sao Paulo

Designed by Russian architect Gregori Warchavchik in 1927 and built in 1928, Modernist House receives a great deal of credit for introducing modernist architecture to São Paulo and Brazil. Here you'll encounter a white building with a symmetrical facade and a long slab curving back skyward above the front door. The spare-looking home contrasts with the surrounding garden that's full of tropical plant species. The interior features open spaces with sparse furnishings, a sharp departure from the Belle Epoque style of Paris influencing upper-class Brazilian architecture and interior design at the time. You'll also find a small exhibition detailing the history of the house and its owner, Mina Klabin. Modernist House forms part of the Museum of the City of São Paulo, a collection of significant sites spread throughout town. You can reach Modernist House by taking the metro to Santa Cruz Station. • This House has a beautiful architecture, and the most incredible is that it looks like something current. However, it was carried out at another time. House and Garden are of great beauty. In the museum Lasar Segall has a space of the Warchavchik and the Clan Klabin, which addresses a bit of the history of this beautiful house. A jewel close to the metro and shopping Santa Cruz.

  • With straight and unadorned lines, this House was totally different from that time. An immense garden with many trees, large rooms, pantry and kitchen even with the tiled ceiling and all the marble shelves, ample halls, four large dorms being three interconnected, wardrobes and spacious bathrooms, terraces and balconies, a huge Pool make up this old but modern residence for the time. It was reformed in 1934, to add rooms that were needed. There's almost no furniture. The story can be known through text, photos and film on site. Too bad the space behind the house, where the pool and other small buildings are located, is poorly cared for. Admission is free, from 9h to 18h.
