Orthodox Cathedral, Sao Paulo

4.6
You can spot the iconic golden dome of this major architectural landmark from quite a distance. Sao Paulo's Orthodox Cathedral, which is dedicated to the city's namesake Saint Paul, is the only cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch in Brazil and one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. The famous Hagia Sophia of Istanbul inspired the design. Construction of this Byzantine church began in the 1940s under the supervision of Paul Taufick Camasmie. In later years, several Russian artists participated in its decoration. When compared to other Eastern Orthodox churches, one of the distinctive architectural characteristics of this building, is that the iconostasis (a wall of icons and religious paintings separating the main body of the church from the altar) is made of marble, rather than wood. Stay for mass and hear the local choir sing ancient Gregorian chants. For Orthodox Cathedral and beyond, use our Sao Paulo holiday builder to get the most from your Sao Paulo vacation.

  • The Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral is very close to the beginning of Paulista. And to know you must go to the vigilante and ask for permission. The Acessoé by the side of the Church and the interior of the church is very beautiful. A religious temple that reminds us of the appreciation of the existence and the feeling of gratitude to the superior forces. An important work as a symbol that religious freedom is possible and healthy in a country, as this enables the growth of individuals in their spirituality and respect for others. Having the opportunity, allow yourself.

  • Every time I step in front of the cathedral, the gates are closed. It took decades for me to finally get to know the cathedral. It's pretty interesting in there, but I thought it was kind of weird because after you go to Istanbul, copies of it get kind of funny. But it's quite different, wide and the altar is beautiful
