Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, Senhor Do Bonfim

#1 of 122 in Historic Sites in State of Bahia
Must see · Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
The most famous church in Salvador, Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim has a long standing history of granting miracles. As you approach the gate, you'll notice it's covered with colorful tissue strips called fitas. Children will try to sell you this colored paper that you can tie to the gate and around your wrist for good luck.

This plain 18th-century building on the small peninsula north of downtown has astonishing symbols inside. At the back of the church, you'll find valuable and significant objects that people have donated as thanks for miracles in the Room of Miracles. And for even odder iconography, look at the hanging body parts cast in plastic, wood, and metal hanging from the ceiling in the Room of Thanks.
