Parque Nacional da Serra dos Orgaos, Teresopolis

4.7
Parque Nacional da Serra dos Orgaos is one of the foremost centers of trekking, mountain climbing and rock climbing in Brazil. Whether you are a novice walker or a seasoned adventurer, the park has something to offer, with extensive trails throughout the region that can take anywhere from a few hours to several days. The park covers a 110 sq km (42 sq mi) area of forested mountains rising from 145 m (476 ft) at its lowest point to 2,263 m (7,425 ft) at its highest. The area is abundant in natural springs and the unusual name--"Organ Mountains"--is believed to have come from early Portuguese settlers who thought that the rocky peaks of the mountain range resembled church organs. The most famous of these formations is the Dedo de Deus (God's Finger) rock, which resembles a left hand pointing towards the sky. It is 1,692 m (5,551 ft) high and can be seen in the background of the flag of the Rio de Janeiro state. • Stunning place to hike, beautiful landscapes and nice weather. The trail is hard during 3 days, but one of the most lovely views that I've taken.  more »
  • Awesome views nearly everywhere you look. Great rock formations and waterfalls. Roads are very windy, so be careful if you suffer from motion sickness.  more »

  • 57 Reales. That's the entrance price that a foreigner pays to go do a day hike up the Morro Açu, no guide. I had to turn back, since I made it a goal not to get robbed in Brazil. 57 is robbery. Nature isn't only for the rich.
  • I hiked from Petropolis to Teresopolis and it was one of the most technically difficult hikes I've done. There is this one part called the "little horse" where the only way to continue is to take your backpack off, grab the rock, swing your leg over the rock, and use your momentum to hoist your body on and over this large rock. Did I mention that this all takes place on cliff where is you fall you die? Yep! It was worth it and so incredibly beautiful but the trail is no joke! Doable if you do it in 2-3 days (carrying your camping gear) but a lot of altitude! I have hiked 36km/day in the snow, and found this hike to be a challenge physically and mentally.
