Just 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver International Airport, Museum of Anthropology, located at the University of British Columbia, houses one of the world’s finest displays of Northwest Coast First Nations arts in a spectacular Arthur Erickson-designed building overlooking mountains and sea. Inside the soaring glass and concrete structure of the museum's Great Hall, see magnificent carvings, weavings, and contemporary artworks. Admire the world’s largest collection of works by acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid, including his famous cedar sculpture The Raven and the First Men, and explore the Multiversity Galleries where over 9,000 objects from around the world are displayed. Additionally, stroll the grounds, where monumental Haida houses, poles and Musqueam house posts capture the dramatic beauty of traditional Northwest Coast architecture and design. Enjoy a wide range of special exhibits and public programs, including free guided tours. Visit the shop for an expertly-curated selection of handcrafted objects and relax in the cafe. Pretty special place that lives up to its reputation. I was interested in Haida culture before I went here, now I’m fascinated by it. Take your time and soak this all in. If timing permits, I recommend taking a free guided tour. Be sure to check out the outside where Bill Reid created a traditional Haida House with totem poles. There are also hiking trails around the building that would be worth your time. This is a must stop if you are in Vancouver.

I highly recommend the Museum of Anthropology for several hours in the morning or afternoon. The museum has over 40,000 items on exhibit, mainly from First Nation in the Pacific Northwest where more than 30 languages were spoken. The free tours are with the hour needed, which are very informative. The museum gives many insights in the self sustaining original inhabitants into their art and culture as well as the impacts of European settlement. There is also an interesting section of tin glazed earthenware with 600 items across European history.
