Pico Do Fogo, Cha das Caldeiras

4.6
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Fogo
Cape Verde's highest peak, Pico Do Fogo dominates the island from a height of 2,829 m (9,281 ft). An active volcano, this mountain can only be climbed with a guide--a trip to the top takes you through a caldera village and across an otherworldly landscape of alternating volcanic ash and lush vegetation. As you climb, look for cultivated patches on which the locals grow bananas, coffee, papaya, and beans. Put Pico Do Fogo on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Cha das Caldeiras online trip itinerary planner .

  • Having the opportunity to go to Fogo and visit Chã de Caldeiras, is something that never forgets again, by the brutality of the landscape after the eruptions and the devastation provoked by them, by the resilience and resistance to the adversity of the people, for their friendliness and cordiality .... It is forever in the memory of an unparalleled location. I highlight the availability and all the explanations and clarifications of our transfer from the airport in S. Filipe p/Chã das Caldeiras, the Marcos Montrond (+ 238 9853493) which I strongly recommend and the warmth and affection of the Cicilio and his wife Helena in the house where We stayed overnight, the Cicicilo house (+ 238 9882127), where you can stay and eat without any fear, people of good to recommend.

  • Beautiful experience, a bus picked us up and took us in an hour to the base of the crater, we met them our guide who accompanied us to the top. 1000 meters of altitude about 3 hours, challenging ascent. Beautiful descent in the middle of the ash

  • Beautiful hike up to the summit. A guide is not really necessary (you can follow the other hikers with guides) but it is not a bad thing to support the locals. Be aware of false tracks made by the guides! Normally the ascent runs through rocky ground and not through loose gravel.
