Porcelain House, Tianjin

#11 of 173 in Things to do in Tianjin
Architectural Building · Tourist Spot
Peruse the exhibits at Porcelain House, a contemporary museum of pottery and antiques entirely decorated in porcelain, inside and out. Though the site was originally a colonial building, the present owner redecorated it by using 700 million porcelain pieces, leaving it with a style combining traditional and modern elements of Chinese culture. You'll see porcelain decorations everywhere--on handrails, ceilings, and walls. Take a walk around the house and see precious furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as the roof of the house, adorned by a gigantic porcelain dragon. • Stay away from this overpriced tourist trap. From a distance the porcelain fragments look ok, but once you get closer you can tell how poorly and haphazardly the pieces are pasted on the walls. When I went the inside was stuffed with random pieces of older furniture but there’s no information about them in either Chinese or English. Because of that you could be in and out in less than 10 minutes. On the whole there’s no story or narrative you get from visiting. It’s just a gaudy display masquerading as art. I don’t know how this place became one of the better known attractions in Tianjin; good marketing I suppose.
  • A small place. High price ticket: 50¥ for such a place. Looks good from outside. But inside the rooms are very messy, unorganized. And there is no English or Chinese explanation. It was totally disappointing.
