Assistens Cemetery, Copenhagen

Assistens Cemetery serves as the burial site of a large number of Danish notables including writer H.C. Andersen and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. During the 18th century, the cemetery was a burial site for the poor. In the first half of the 19th century many leading figures of the epoch were laid to rest there, and that trend continued up through the 20th century. See the graves of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Niels Bohr and of a number of American jazz musicians, including Ben Webster and Kenny Drew. The cemetery is also the largest and most important green space in the district. To find out how to plan a trip to Copenhagen, use our trip itinerary maker.
