The first Catholic congregations in Denmark after the Protestant reformation were centered on foreign legations. Starting with the one formed by the Spanish diplomat (and poet) Count Bernardino de Rebolledo, who served in Denmark between 1648 and 1659, continuous church registers were kept. From its original location at de Rebolledo's residence on Østergade the chapel moved around between various legation addresses, but in 1764 it settled at the present location on what is now Bredgade. For some time the Austrian legation had been the main supporter of the congregation, and the new chapel was financed by Empress Maria Theresia.
The present day church was designed by the German-born architect Gustav Friedrich Hetsch. Construction began in 1840 and the church was consecrated on All Saints' Day, 1 November 1842. During 1988–1992 the church underwent extensive restoration in collaboration with the National Museum of Denmark under the direction of the architect Vilhelm Wohlert.
Saint Ansgar's Cathedral Reviews
La chiesa di San Ansgar funge da chiesa parrocchiale per i cattolici del quartiere e da cattedrale per tutti i cattolici della Danimarca. The facade, in red stone, is on Bredgade but the entrance is from a small side door that is located inside a courtyard. The church is modern because after the Protestant Reformation and until the mid-nineteenth century it was forbidden in Denmark to profess the Catholic religion. The church is therefore relatively modern. However, upon entering, the attention is immediately drawn from the apse, which is painted in oil and has in the center a Christ on a gold background, typical of the oldest Byzantine churches. I find the nineteenth-century choice of painting an apse in that way questionable, but I do not know the historical process that led to such a decision. Wood is the predominant element of the furnishings, reminiscent of those of Protestant churches. At the entrance there is a box of offers to be paid to finance the payment of fire insurance.

I enjoyed every moment I spent in the Cathedral feeling like in my parish...
Beautiful music with mass in Latin;Danish and English.
High Mass on the first and third Sundays of the month are in Latin / Gregorian tradition. Brilliant setting for a deeply faithful community.
