The Cathedral Museum, Copenhagen

#42 of 57 in Museums in Copenhagen
Take a look behind the scenes of one of Copenhagen's most enduring symbols at The Cathedral Museum. Since its construction in the 12th century, the Church of Our Lady has been intertwined with the history of the city itself--most notably as the site of several Danish royal weddings and coronations. Through the ages, the cathedral has seen several major renovations, and the museum in the former crypt tells the story of the changes it's endured through a collection of decorative artifacts as well as the remains of the original structure. A visit to the ruins gives you a chance to go to the street level of medieval Copenhagen. As the cathedral remains an active place of worship, tours are not available during services. • It was an experience that nearly brought me to tears. An incredible depiction of Jesus in his shroud, surrounded by the apostles, in such a serene and noble setting. It was the first place we visited.  more »
  • Copenhagen, Denmark is a must-see city and, of course, one of the central and modern museums to visit when the country is gone

  • The highlight of this museum is definitely the Viking exhibit. I would highly recommend the guided tour "Meet the Vikings" that runs everyday for a small additional fee. My guide was studying viking history at university and she was so knowledgeable and explained everything in much greater detail. Nothing else in the museum really caught my interest and I found myself having to re-read the informational plaques a few times because my mind kept wandering. However, the viking exhibit is well worth the entrance fee and I would spend my entire time there.
  • The museum does an excellent job of telling the story of history; the exhibits and artifacts are well-curated to illustrate Denmark's history from ancient until modern times. I find many history museums to be somewhat disjointed--curated based on the objects they happen to have, rather than curated to best teach the history of the place in a cohesive manner. Unlike other reviewers, I do not think the viking exhibit is the highlight. It's cool, for sure, especially given the importance of the vikings to the public consciousness, but the rest of the museum is equally interesting.
