Frederiksborg Castle, Hillerod

4.8
#1 of 55 in Parks in Copenhagen Region
Head to Frederiksborg Castle to explore the lavish rooms and lush gardens of past Danish royalty, now transformed into the area's national history museum. The oldest parts of the castle were built by Frederick II in 1560, but the majority of what remains today was constructed by Christian IV in the early 1600s. Walk the grounds of the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia to see fountains, sculptures, hedges, and a variety of flowers and other foliage. The castle is in the middle of Palace Lake and stretches across three small islands. Check out the large Baroque chapel, the lavishly decorated rooms, the Great Hall and Throne Room, and the contemporary Danish art collection housed inside. A small cafe in the garden is an ideal place to sit down and grab a coffee while taking in great views of the palace. • By chance we decided to visit this castle one day that we left over time after seeing the Kronborg Castle (Hillerød and Helsingør is half an hour by direct train and are ideal to visit both castles on the same day) is a Renaissance style castle with beautiful gardens where you hartareis to take photos. The interior does not disappoint either: has a beautiful chapel and beautiful rooms. I recommend to visit the castle of Kronborg and Fredericksburg the same day (we did Copenhagen-Helsingør-Hillerød-Copenhagen and give just to go back in time to have dinner calmly watching both castles).

  • Great place to visit! It has some beautiful gardens too. The castle is beautiful and very close to the train station. I would recommend going here. It’s a great place to have a long walk!
  • Well spent time for a family trip. You can get a nice walk at the park and around the lakes, and visit a very pretty castle (both from inside and outside) as well. Definitely worth the visit.
