Trip Planner: South America / Ecuador / Pichincha Province / Quito / Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania
Quito's famous Baroque church, Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania dazzles visitors with its golden interior. Dripping with extravagance, the church is adorned head to toe in gold leaf decorations, perhaps explaining why it took 160 years to build. Equally impressive-- though not nearly as golden--the church's symmetrical facade gives visitors a taste of what's to come inside. Have a look at the indigenous Ecuadorian faces depicted subtly on the pillars. Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania reviews
Okay, this is pretty impressive, and I've seen my share of churches. But the best part is when you have a tour guide take you to the roof where you can see the basilica from the top. more »

The detail in all of the gold, silver and wood is simply breathtaking. Definitely a must see if you're in Quito. They do not allow pictures to be taken, which is somewhat a shame, because the world should be able to see the care taken in the creation of this beauty.
