Karl-Marx-Allee, Berlin

4.0
Step back in time to post-World War II Germany at Karl-Marx-Allee, one of East Germany's main housing projects during the postwar reconstruction. Built by the German Democratic Republic between 1952 and 1960, the enormous development contained apartments for workers, shops, restaurants, a hotel, and a cinema considered enormous by the era's standards. Wedding cake-style buildings in the social classicist style tower above the nearly 2 km long avenue. The facades are adorned with ceramic facings with traditional Berlin iconography by Karl Friedrick Schnickel. As you walk down the grand boulevard, you will be able to imagine life in 1950s East Germany, when this area was a prime shopping destination and icon of the new Soviet era.
