Trip Planner: Europe / Germany / Berlin / The Holocaust Memorial - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
One of the most moving and controversial sites in the world, The Holocaust Memorial - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a massive artwork, covering an entire city block. Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, it features nearly 3,000 concrete slabs arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. The work is meant to produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, and many liken it to an abstract representation of a cemetery. The slabs are approximately 2.4 m (7 ft) long, 1 m (3 ft) wide, and vary in height from 20 cm to 5 m (8 in to 16 ft). They start out at ground level on the outer edges of the memorial and grow taller towards the middle, where the ground slopes downwards. Look for the underground museum, which offers extensive details on the Holocaust and the people who died during it. The site attracts nearly 4 million visitors each year. A great piece of history that can't be missed in Berlin. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but as you start to walk deeper into the memorial the stones get much larger. The museum underground was free. I would highly recommend going to visit that. It was very deep and a lot to take, but worth it. Understand this history is very important. Some pieces in the museum were very graphic.
It exceeds my expectation. To be honest, i wasn’t so impressed when i first saw the pix online, and like some other reviewers said this particular episode of history is very well presented by other more “entertaining” ( excuse me for the choice of word) methods. But when i got there, and stood there on the periphery, watching each and every other tourists walked in and sunk deeper among the cement blocks until finally and slowly disappeared completely, i was instantly captured by this place. The design is respectfully clever and thought-provoking, i highly recommend this place as a must-see for all visitors. Kudos Germany!
