Soak up the local culture at Marienplatz, the city's main public square since 1158. Today, the square is dominated by the Gothic city hall, which you'll find on the northern side. Ages ago, markets and tournaments were held in this square, which is named after a Marian column standing at its center. The column was built in 1638 in honor of the Virgin Mary, a sign of gratitude for the end of Swedish occupation. Note the city hall's clock tower, which was inspired by the medieval tournaments once held here. It features 43 bells and 32 life-size figures. The bells chime several times a day, and some of the figures dance, prompting passers-by to stop and check their watches. The 85 m (280 ft) tower is open for visitors. To highlight the new town hall with its chimes, the old Town hall which is actually very new because it is all restored and the terraces in the same square where you sit and enjoy an ice cream, beer or eat quietly.
Great views & close to the bear houses, where many tourists like to go (not my cup of tea, but good to observe the culture). Too much public smoking wherever you walk ... Munich needs to do more to fight for clean air.
An amazing experience during Christmas. Tons of amazing little shops and stands everywhere. It was a one-in-lifetime chance for me to be there and it did not disappoint. The people were so nice. I would love to come back.
