Ancient Agora of Athens, Athens

4.6
The commercial, political, and religious center of ancient Athens, Ancient Agora of Athens offers you a chance to gain insight into the origins of democracy. Founded in the 6th century BCE, this large open area stood in the middle of the city and served as a meeting place used to enact laws, make decisions about the city's defense, and hold public forums to discuss ostracism, the expulsion of a citizen for a period of ten years. Visit this archeological site to see two of ancient Athens' major landmarks, a temple dedicated to the god Hephaestus and a two-story covered walkway, reconstructed in the 1950s to house a museum of ancient clay, bronze, and glass objects. • Seen from the street, the Agora does not seem very large. This changes immediately as soon as you pass the gate. Huge terrain where there is a lot to see and where much has been preserved. Have walked through here for over an hour.

  • Incredible site with imposing ruins, a beautiful landscape, and an excellent view of the Acropolis. This site is part of the Acropolis combination ticket and is about a ten minute walk from the Acropolis. Although the entrance is located along a busy street, you would never know you're in the heart of the city when in the Agora. Despite the rich history and its importance to Western civilization, the Agora isn't terribly busy, and the site is large enough that there are times when you are completely alone. I wish we had more time to spend here. We were there for about an hour and could have used another hour.
  • Albeit once one of Athens' hubs, this place is not overcrowded today. Astonishingly, thanks to its great area there are also spots where you are virtually alone. When walking through the Agora, you feel a bit like travelling back to the ancient times. Additionally, you have a great view of the Acropolis🏛️
