The largest of Athens' many museums, National Archaeological Museum houses a vast collection of ancient artifacts unearthed from a variety of excavation sites around Greece. The museum's world-famous Mycenaean collection includes the 19th century finds by archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, featuring golden funerary masks, relief stelae, alabaster tools, ivory carvings, and jewelry. The museum also displays a staggering array of ancient figurines, frescoes from the volcanic island of Santorini, and the oldest known mechanical computer, designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. There's so much to see here, it may take you several visits to absorb it all. Make your trip through ancient history a bit more comprehensible by arranging for a guided tour of the museum's most representative exhibits. National Archaeological Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

National Archaeological Museum reviews
Wonderfully laid out collection of Greek artifacts. Superb collection of historical information gathered under one roof Not to be missed on your trip to Athens. more »
The largest and best collection of Greek antiquities in the world, must see when in Athens. Easy to navigate. Monumental statutary and bronze of the Jockey of Artemision alone are worth the trip. more »
This place was inspiring both as an archeologist and an artist. Some rooms are more compelling than others, but you can see world famous artifacts each after another in every one of them. If you only visit a couple of museums in Athens, I would recommend putting this on your list. Otherwise, its a bit like every other archaeological museum, so if that's not your thing, visiting this one won't change that.
Nice museum. The area near museum is dangerous after sun sets. I recommend to go with metro ( in my experience Station Victoria was the best. Not so far and not so many homeless and immigrants). Keep the main street not the small one.
