Cellular Jail, Port Blair

4.5
When in Port Blair, history lovers should not miss a tour of Cellular Jail, a prison used to hold political prisoners and dissidents during the independence movement. The prison was built in 1906 by the British, as the number of prisoners being exiled to the Andaman Islands grew with the beginning of the struggle for independence. Take a guided tour of the vast red brick building, a site of torture, hunger strikes, and rebellions. The fortress takes its name from its 693 cells, each one a tiny space used for solitary confinement only. • This is the main attraction of Port Blair. It's an very old historical place (ancient jail of British Era) which is related to the great freedom fighters of our country. It has a big span, total 7 buildings were there contained with several cells but in present 3 blocks are there. Every cell has a story to tell. One should hire a guide if interested to know those stories. The view of the Andaman sea from the rooftop is fantastic. One can also enjoy the light and sounds show which narrates the history of the jail. This place is also very good for kids. Overall I really had a great experience.
  • The place is well maintained and the tickets to visit the jail is pretty affordable. If anyone get a chance to visit cellular jail, I recommend you to go to the top of the building which is easily accessible to the public and see the beautiful view of the sea and Ross island next to it. Some parts are off limits because of renovation work. The light festival which happens everyday is not impressive. But if you are a person who's interested in history, light festival would be really informative.
