  • I was disappointed I couldn’t actually enter the church itself, only the outer hallways. This is a display and memorial to the 5500 men who died during WW1 in the area. Many of their bones are laid...  more »
  • A church turned WWI memorial - more than 5,000 soldiers from WWI are interred within the Tempio. It is a quiet and sober church, but there is an informative exhibit as well on WWI in Bassano and in.....  more »

  • Imposing Military Shrine Where there are the remains of 5405 fallen of the first World War + 86 between military (deaths in Germany and Russia) and civilians (deceased under the bombing in Bassano = Total 5491 remains (1073 in the crypt and 4418 in the Loculi in 10 chapels (5 per side). Holy Place 2 times = Church and Shrine. Opened in May of 1934. Venetian Gothic Style with traces of Romanesque. Façade 28 meters high and at the top there is a stone cross. Above The main door (H. 13 meters) There is a large rose window with a diameter of about 10 meters + two more small roses, on the sides. The images are the Redeemer in the center, on the left San Bassiano (patron of Bassano) and on The right Beata Giovanna Maria Bonomo. The Latter is a very important Blessed in Bassano, is the patron Saint of the city. It Was born on 15 08 1606 ad Asiago and has made famous the monastery of St. Jerome (Sacramentine in Via Beata Giovanna, the homonymous Street that leads to the old town of Bassano.) She was attributed with many prodigious healings. Many pilgrims and also nobles and important personalities Came to visit. In the church dedicated to her, near the monastery, there are Her relics. The interior of the Ossario is a Latin cross 75 meters long, 37 m wide and the transept 43 m. It is divided into 3 NAVES. Total surface about 1400 square meters. The Ossario Temple was started in 1908 and was to become the Cathedral of Bassano, but many hitches, including the First World War, made complicated its complete construction. At the beginning the land, which was owned by Mons. Giovanni Battista Gobbi, did not like the Bassanese because the area was marshy, unhealthy. The New Bridge was not there and so it was a very uncomfortable place to get to. In the end everything was resolved and there was an agreement between the Ministry of Defense, Parish and Commune: It would not become the Duomo, but an Ossario/Church. It Was inaugurated on May 13, 1934 with a solemn ceremony, with the presence of Prince Umberto of Savoy (heir to the throne), Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Aosta and the Marshal of Italy Gaetano Giardino etc. The 5491 Deceased, are soldiers who came from ALL over ITALY and who fought here in our areas. More than 200 are decorated with silver or bronze medals for military valor. They fought mainly on MOUNT GRAPPA and ASIAGO area 1917/18. A sizeable group was also given by the "Boys of 99", barely eighteen boys who had been called to arms to replace the dead military in the defeat of CAPORETTO (autumn 1917) and who were honored in 1918 in the last victorious phase of War. Then There are also the bodies of 4 officers decorated with gold medal and the remains of Prince Umberto of Savoy/Aosta, Count of Salemi, grandson of the I ° Re d'italia Vittorio Emanuele II ° and brother of the Duke of Aosta. One of these 4 officers was from Marostica and his city remembers him every year, on the anniversary of his death. The LOCULI are closed with slabs of straw yellow marble from Istria. The names are in ALPHABETICAL order. The colouring of the vaults and dome in blue and gold was redone by the painter Bassanese VERENINI. Restoration works Are underway. You Think that in three years of war several hundreds of thousands of Italians and Austrians died. What nonsense!!! Visiting This place I think is proper for all of us, to make us understand that these children SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN, indeed their premature and terrible death must make us think. Inside is the exhibition "... And Bassano went to war. " Also exhibited Are many drawings of children of the primary schools of Bassano, who participated in the competition graphic: "Peace is". Outside there is a large FOUNTAIN work by the sculptor Povese, Natalino Andolfaction. A thank you goes to the Fighting Associations and weapons for the precious collaboration that allows you to keep open the Ossario Temple also on Saturday and Sunday 10-12 and 15-18. And to the Honorary staff of the Ministry of Defence for the opening of the L/V 9-12 and 13-17. Free Offer. 🔝
