Standing tall in Pisa's most famous square, Duomo di Pisa is a medieval cathedral dating to 1064. The church has a distinctive Pisan-Romanesque style with noticeable Byzantine influences. Admire the black-and-white marble interior, and look up at the gilded ceiling and the frescoed dome. The frescoes had to be redone after a fire in 1595 that ruined much of the cathedral's Renaissance artworks. The 14th-century mosaic in the apse survived the fire. Look for the sarcophagus of St. Ranieri, Pisa's patron saint. Put Duomo di Pisa into our Pisa holiday planning tool to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Pisa.

  • The dome of the Cathedral of Pisa is elliptical and ended in bulb, as in the Byzantine tradition. The plant is a five-to-one naval Latin cross. Inside the blind arches are placed geometric decorations with polychrome marbles, of Islamic taste. Characteristics of the Pisa architecture are the loggettes in the facade, which give lightness to the construction and determine a continuous change of chiaroscuro. I highly recommend going to visit it because it is placed in a magnificent setting, the Square of Miracles. It's like there's a completely different world in a square in Pisa.
