Villa dei Misteri, Pompeii

4.7
Ancient Pompeii's most famous structure, Villa dei Misteri is a remarkably well-preserved ruin of a Roman villa noted for its vibrant wall paintings. The structure sustained only minor damage from the infamous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, and remained covered by a thick layer of ash and soil for nearly two millennia. Excavation on one of the most stunning finds in the ancient city started in 1909, revealing a series of rooms filled with virtually undamaged columns, mosaics, frescoes, and relics of everyday life. Restored and reopened to visitors in early 2015, the elegant suburban villa provides a rare look at the splendor enjoyed by Pompeii's wealthy families. Villa dei Misteri is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

  • This is off the beaten track in the Pompei Archeological Park and quite a walk to reach but well worth it. There are many wall paintings, frescoes and mosaic floors in this House Of Mysteries...  more »
  • We had time so Michael, our private guide, made special stop here. The vila is beautiful but the painting inside more so.  more »

  • Without a doubt, one if the best preserved examples of Roman (upper class) living. The villa/ farm house yields great insights into the typical life if the Roman people. The villa is so well preserved that even the fresco paintings in the wall can be easily viewed. Well worth the walk if you visit pompei.
  • Really nice but don't be led astray by the rough guide and other tourist guides and information. It's part of the Pompeii site and no longer a separate entity as the boundary fence has changed and incorporates the Villa dei Misteri the gate staff at the exit only gate near the villa are unhelpful and will let you walk along the via dei Misteri all day and not tell you where to go. So you must enter via one of the main Pompeii entrances and walk along the Roman streets of Pompeii. Make sure you have thick soled shoes as it certainly hurt my feet walking along.
