Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Campania / Province of Salerno / Amalfi Coast / Ravello / Villa Rufolo
Renowned for its moonlight concerts, Villa Rufolo was built in the 13th century for a wealthy local family. The villa is famed for its cascading gardens, which were created in 1853 by Francis Neville Reid, a Scotsman who bought the property and not only took care of its restoration, but also designed the current layout. The gardens are known for their luxurious flower beds, which blossom in bursts of exotic colors throughout the year, as well as for offering panoramic views of the world-famous Amalfi Coast. German composer Richard Wagner visited the villa in 1880 and was so overcome by the attractiveness of the location that he later used it as a setting in of one of his operas. This place is kind of in the middle of nowhere and it does have beautiful sights to see but it’s not as culturally and historically engaging as I think it could be. The steps they have to the top are a hike and it’s extremely hot up there but it provides a good overlook of the town and the flower gardens are absolutely stunning. I still can’t explain much of the history but I know I saw some pretty sights will being here. It’s hot; and prepare to do a lot of walking or hiking.
The entrance cost is 7€, I think it is a beautiful villa, it has an absolutely amazing view! Would totally recommend going there.. a lot of things to see, a beautiful sea view from the garden, on hot summer days it can get a little too hot but the shade of the villa makes it all better..
