It links the New and Old Procuratie, forming a monumental complex with three Wings in the shape of U. It was built in the early 19th century in the neoclassical style (in place of the 16th-century Church of St. Geminian by the architect Jacopo Sansovino), on Commission of Eugene of Beauharnais, stepson of Napoleon I, and designed by the architect Giuseppe Maria Soli. It is spread over two floors. On the ground floor, preceded by 3 steps, there are 15 portals with arches in full (along which, in the center, are depicted heads of women or men or animals, while, on the sides, there are figurines of naked men), resting on Doric pillars, interspersed with 16 columns Doric. A long and elegant frieze separates the ground floor from the first floor. On the first floor there are, behind balconies with balustrade, 15 windows with arches all round (along which, in the center, are depicted heads of women or animals, while, on the sides, there are figurines of women dressed or half-naked), resting on Ionic columns, interspersed with 16 Ionic columns. The building is complemented by a long and elegant floral frieze, interspersed, at the underlying columns, by 16 figurines of putti; above the trabeation there are 14 statues of Roman emperors, interspersed with floral tiles, while in the center stands a scene, in bas-relief, with mainly female characters. The main floor of the building is home to part of the Correr Museum.
This is a very beautiful building in Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square),a very busy and crowded area more »
