  • Before visiting St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace we attended the event of the "Flight of the Angel" or "Flight of the Colombina" from the Bell of St. Mark at 12.00 on 24/02/19. It was so many people that it took us almost an hour to get to St. Mark's Square. This event, as part of the Venice Carnival, has ancient origins: it was first organized around the middle of the sixteenth century as "Turkish Flight", because a Turkish acrobat walked, with the help of a long perch, a rope that started from a boat to get to the bell cell of the Bell of St. Mark, after which, downhill, reached The Duke's Palace. Subsequently the event was called "Flight of the Angel", because the rope was crossed, from the bell tower of St. Mark to the Doge's Palace, by a man with wings, suitably harnessed, coming down at great speed. After the second half of the 18th century, as a result of a fatal accident, the event became known as the "Flight of the Columbine": the rope was crossed by a large wooden dove that released flowers and confetti on the festive crowd. Under Napoleonic rule the carnival was suspended to be resumed in 1979. In the "Flight of the Columbine" the wooden dove was replaced with a mechanical dove that released candy and confetti on the crowd. In 2001 it was decided to return to the "Flight of the Angel" with a person of renowned fame. Since 2011 the role of angel has been entrusted to the winner of the "Feast of Mary" of the previous year, who is smeared with a metal cable wearing an elegant Venetian period costume.

  • I stayed in Venice until the last day of the carnival. I used to make my own costumes and take them with me, and i could sit in a café or other place singing my costume, take pictures, and take pictures. It was a fun and very impressive trip just to walk around because mascara was everywhere in the city.
