The Chiesa di San Giacomo dall'Orio is a church located in the sestiere of Santa Croce in Venice, northern Italy. The origin of the church's name is unknown. Possibilities include being named after a laurel that once stood nearby, a version of dal Rio, or once standing on an area of dried-up swamp . It was founded in the 9th century and rebuilt in 1225. The campanile dates from this period. There have been a number of rebuildings since that time and the ship's keel roof dates from the 14th century. Two of the columns were brought back from the Fourth Crusade, after the sacking of Constantinople.San Giacomo dall'Orio is a parish church of the Vicariate of San Polo-Santa Croce-Dorsoduro. The other churches in the parish are the churches of San Stae and San Zan Degolà.Works of art Francesco Bassano (Madonna in Glory and St John the Baptist preaching in the new sacristy, the latter including portraits of Bassano's family and Titian) Lorenzo Lotto (Madonna and Four Saints, the altarpiece of the high altar) Palma il Giovane (Mystery of the Eucharist covering the walls and part of the ceiling of the old sacristy; two scenes from the Life of St Laurence in the north transept) Paolo Veneziano (painted Crucifix hanging in front of the high altar (attributed)) Veronese (Sts Laurence, Jerome and Prosper, altarpiece in the north transept; Allegory of Faith and The Doctors of the Church on the ceiling of the new sacristy (both by Veronese's workshop))Plan to visit Chiesa di San Giacomo dell'Orio and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Venice attractions using our Venice trip tool .

Moreover, they represent a real "miser" in relation to the cost of the maintenance and restoration of these remarkable buildings. Moreover, given the small amount of visitors, it is far from being a financial windfall... In this building, with its splendid ceiling in an upturned ship's hull, there are many works of art: a quad-lobed benign in Anatolia marble, an ancient column in green marble, a pulpit to preach in the shape of a tulip... It contains above all remarkable paintings: "The Wedding of Cana" by Bonifacio by PITTATI, "The Virgin in Glory" by Francesco BASSANO, "The Virgin to the Child" by Lorenzo LOTTO and the incomparable "Martyre de Saint Laurent" by PALMA LE JEUNE. 2 paintings illustrate a very rare iconography: "The Miracle of St. James who resurrects a rooster" and "The Miracle of the Virgin" by Gaetano ZOMPINI. A splendid painted wooden Crucifix, the work of Paolo VENEZIANO, hangs from the vault opening onto the choir. This church is absolutely worth a thorough visit. However, it is unfortunate not to be able to take pictures (without flash, of course !!!) because the dissemination of these to friends or acquaintances would perhaps make the monument better known and thus increase the number of visitors. The remarkable is true for other churches in Venice.
Bonita plaza y bonita iglesia que paseando por allí es una visita muy gratificante, merece la pena visitar. more »Nice square and nice church that walking around is a very rewarding visit, worth visiting.
