Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Paul, Mdina

4.5
Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Admire the red-and-white striped dome, decorated ceilings, and walls adorned with sculptures and religious artifacts inside Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Paul. Designed by architect Lorenzo Gafa, the Baroque cathedral was built from 1697 to 1702 to replace a ruined Norman cathedral destroyed by the 1693 earthquake. Enter the church and notice the graves on the floor ingrained with colored marble. You can visit a museum attached to the church building. View some of the surviving artifacts like a painting by Mattia Preti, depicting the conversion of St. Paul, and a 15th-century Tuscan painting of the Madonna and Child. Be sure to cover your shoulders prior to entering the cathedral (as is the custom) and check the hours the cathedral is open to visitors before visiting. • Beautiful baroque building and frescoes. Visited the museum too which was also very good. This won't take long to go round so it's nice to fit in on a visit to Mdina.  more »

  • Wow. What a beauty ! Incredible cathedral. Open to the public. Ladies cover up and remain respectful because you can’t go in wearing Inappropriate attire or revealing clothing. Artwork and painting and entire place is stunning. A must see if you’re in Malta - go to Mdina. Beautiful
  • A very impressive Catholic church! You can admire the architecture and the paintings inside that are all around and even on the floor!! What I didn't like is that there is a combined entrance with the museum as well at 10 euros... we found the monuments around Malta rather expensive since it was 10 euros for everywhere...I think there should be a separate entrance with less fee because we didn't really find the museum interesting but we had to pay for both! Other than that it's an amazing cathedral!
