Walk through the hallways of history at Grandmaster's Palace, completed in 1571, just six years after the Great Siege of Malta. It has served as the island's center of government ever since. First used by the grandmasters of the Order of Malta, then the British governors, the palace houses the office of the President today. The interior is lavishly decorated with paintings, frescoes, suits of armor, and mosaics that celebrate Maltese history and cultural heritage. Stroll through the halls, chambers, and courtyards. Don't miss the armory, perhaps the palace's greatest attraction, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including Jean Parisot de Valette's personal armor. The admission fee includes an audio tour. Bear in mind that the palace is a government building and some rooms are not accessible to the public. Grandmaster's Palace reviews
While a lot of the other culturally important sites were entirely closed or just closed on mondays and tuesdays due to the Coronavirus-Pandemic of 2020, this site was closed due to refurbishments. I..... more »
One of the interesting places to visit in Valetta. Some parts are closed at the moment, but the building is nevertheless worth a visit more »
My visit to the Grandmaster Palace actually left be a bit disappointed. I was expecting a spectacular interior like those found at other royal palaces in Europe. Instead the interior is not only quite dull, but also in dire need of repairs. The armory might be worth a visit for those with an interest in medieval weapons, but other than that there was really not that much to see.
Would have gotten 4 stars but the place is under serious restoration which is badly needed so half of the state rooms are closed off by scaffolding. The armoury is interesting enough but the war museum at fort st Elmo's is far larger better and goes through larger time span.
