Utsikten is the viewpoint at Gaularfjellet is one of the spots that offer fine views of the scenery along the road. This rest area is located at the top of the ascent from the Vetlefjord, and from here a magnificent vista of the verdant and beautiful scenery opens out, with the scenic route snaking up the hillside. With a clear view towards 1500-metre high mountains and deep canyons, the viewing platform balances on the edge of the mountain, 700 metres above the ocean. This is partially wheelchair accessible. This stunning new viewpoint is situated at Mount Gaularfjell - 703 meters above sea level. The journey starts by bus from Balestrand and on the way up to the viewpoint you will enjoy beautiful mountain- and fjord scenery. The scenic tour to the viewpoint lasts about 40 minutes. The road to Gaularfjell is one of the designated national tourist routes of Norway, and passes along branches of Sognefjorden and small farms with beautiful natural scenery. Then the road gets quite curvy climbing up the mountain side through nine sharp bends before you get to the top and the viewpoint. The viewpoint is built by the Norwegian Road Administration and designed by Code architects after a competition. The idea is to make the viewpoint appear as a clear shape in the landscape and provide a spectacular sight. Even before its completion, the viewpoint gained a lot of international attention. The structure is a triangular concrete surface, with corners pointing towards north, south and west. Each corner is shaped specifically in relation to the landscape. If you have a fear of heights, you might need to combat it, but the effort is certainly worth it! The viewpoint’s surface is 420 square meters and it kind of looks like an unfolded blanket for a picnic. At the viewpoint, you will be surrounded by 1500 m high mountains.
This viewpoint of Gaularfjellet (or Utsikten) is an authentic architectural gem. It has a really impressive view and catches of passage from the region of the fjord of the dreams to the area of the fjord of Geiranger (patrimony of the humanity). A place you should not miss if you go to Norway.
