Discover what life was like for the Hanseatic merchants of Bergen at Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene. Housed in a waterfront wooden warehouse from 1704, the museum covers the period when the Hanseatic League ruled the city. Take a step back in time and walk through the three-story museum's replicated authentic trading room, offices, sleeping quarters, and kitchen. Notice the small beds, low ceilings, and the smell of cod to get a taste of what a merchant's everyday life was like, and view relevant art work from the period. • The museum is closed for renovations until 2026. Some of the collection has been moved to the Schoetstuene museum, but not all is yet on display. The Schoetstuene museum is worth a visit.  more »
  • This palace of 700, Palazzo Finnegard, imposing on the Bryggen, preserves the historical memory of the city and reconstructs the history and life of the Hansa merchants from the XV to the XVIII century. They are a dozen furnished rooms, with dark wood panelling and creaked wooden floors, books, paintings, trunks, various utensils of the time. The ticket is, in fact, a little pricey and they know it as well, since they give-connected-the entrance to the museum of the fishery, transfer included. But it does not interest anyone...

  • Excellent museum detailing the history of the Bryggen. Informative and good displays of what it used to be like. The building itself is one of the oldest in the area and gives you a real sense of what it was like living and working here. Reasonable entrance fee for a worthwhile visit. Staff were friendly and the exhibits were all well done and laid out. Spans 3 floors. Recommended.
  • Well preserved and maintained museum with info in 4 languages. Lots of info boards, but don't visit this place without the free guided tour; so much more involvement from the visit if you do. Guides are amazingly equipped linguistically, enthusiastic and very well informed. Top museum action! Allow 2 hours minimum for a visit.
