Saltstraumen represents a narrow strait with the strongest tidal current in the world, which makes it popular among divers and anglers. The current produces maelstroms and whirlpools up to 10 m (33 ft) in diameter and 5 m (16 ft) deep. Walk up to the bridge to see the foaming stream from above, or descend to the waterfront to view it up close. The water swarms with various species of fish like cod, halibut, and coalfish, the regional specialty. You can fish from the bridge, the shore, or a boat.
