Trip Planner: Europe / Norway / Eastern Norway / Buskerud / Hol Municipality / Geilo / Aurlandsdalen
Aurlandsdalen is a glacially-formed Norwegian valley that is about in length . The valley is situated in Aurland municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, to the south of the Sognefjorden. One of the best-known tourist tracks in Norway follows the valley from Geiteryggen just across the border of Hol municipality and north east to Aurlandsvangen at the Aurlandsfjorden in Sogn. The valley narrows and becomes a tight, dramatic Western Norway valley. It combines the natural beauty of glacially carved valleys with diverse, abundant plant species, and a number of cultural monuments in the form of old farms and mountain dairy farms to form a recognized tourist attraction. The richness in plant species is due to both the soil, rich in minerals formed from phyllitt in the rocks and cultural influence through the centuries. The upper part of the river running through the valley is called Stemberdøla; in the lower part it is called Aurlandselvi. The route from Aurland to Hol has been the shortest connection between western and eastern Norway since prehistoric times. Thus the valley has been an important connection line for commercial journeys and cattle drives through and along the valley and over the surrounding mountain highlands.Access to the valleyAurlandsdalen can be reached either from the village of Aurlandsvangen or from Vierbotn at Geiteryggen (which transliterates, perhaps descriptively, as goat's back). Access to Aurlandsvangen is possible via hurtigbåt (rapid boat) from Bergen or via the European route E16 highway. Geiteryggen can be reached via highway 50 from Hol in Hallingdal. Dear hikers I just tried to hike from Vassbygdi and there’s a stone landslide after km 3. Therefore the hike is closed and people at working to make the passage safe. They said it will take a... more »
We did the østerboø to vassbygdi leg of the hike. It's mostly downhill so not too strenuous. The scenery gets better and better as you go. more »
Aurlandsdalen Valley is wild and beautiful. This place has it's own unique experience. The hike from Østerbø Fjellstove to Vassbygdi is quite famous. The untouched, wild and beautiful nature of Western Norway, along with the age-old history and culture of all the small settlements, builds respect and fascination for what is and what once was there. The Aurlandsdalen Valley is called Norway’s Grand Canyon for a reason. The Aurlandsdalen Valley and Nærøyfjorden, located at the end of the Sognefjord, are two classic hiking areaswith plenty of other outdoor adventureswithin easy reach. The well-known and historic Aurlandsdalen Valley, was once one of the main routes between the eastern and western parts of Norway. This area is wild and breathtaking, rich in plant and animal life, cultural treasures, history and geological features. We can hike through the valley and stay overnight in the mountain lodges along the way, or come by bus or private car for shorter trips.
Great walk downhill from Østerbø to Vassbygdi. You can shorten the walk by 1-2 hours by taking the bus to Berdalen and walk down to Vassbygdi. We had some rain during the walk but that’s to be expected walking in the mountains in Norway ;-) Happy we did the shorter version, it’s a demanding walk. Strongly recommended though!
