At Karl Johans gate, walk down Oslo's main street while passing by some of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Named after King Charles III John upon his death, the street was once multiple roads that have now merged into one, leading you from from Oslo Central Station all the way to the Royal Palace. Along the way, stop by the National Theatre, the Palace Park, the Oslo Cathedral, the Bazaar Market, and the historic Fire Watch building, which served as the city's central fire station from 1860 to 1939. Shop or eat at one of the many restaurants and boutiques that line the street. Put Karl Johans gate into our Oslo visit app and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The Karl Johans gate leads straight from the station to the castle. Along the way, you can pass numerous sights of the city of 700,000 inhabitants. On my visit two days before the national holiday (17 May), all the shops and pubs were decorated with flags and street musicians played for a little petty cash. At 18 degrees and sun, many people sat outside enjoying spring. The cosmopolitan, liberal and cheerful Oslo-here on the Karl Johans gate you can watch him for hours.
