Oslo Cathedral (Oslo Domkirke), Oslo

3.9
Oslo Cathedral (Oslo Domkirke) provides a serene place where you can take part in a service and light a candle. It also hosts public celebrations and royal events. The 17th-century Baroque church was restored to its original interior in 1950, on the ninth centennial of Oslo. See the authentic altarpiece with the painting of the Last Supper, the pulpit, and the christening font carved with acanthus leaves. During the restoration, the floor was covered with marble stones and brickwork, and all furnishings were refurbished. Be sure to look up and view the ceiling paintings, works by a 20th-century Norwegian artist that depict different scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. Oslo Cathedral (Oslo Domkirke) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Oslo Edition.

  • Very beautiful, not overloaded Nordic-style church right on the Karl Johans gate, which, unlike in Trondheim or Tromsö, you can visit for free. After a visit to the bustling shopping street, it's just the place to rest.

  • Not so big, very beautiful church in Oslo. I really enjoyed there, glasspaintings were unique and altarpiece was magnificent!  more »

  • I have been inside the Oslo Cathedral couple of times and, since I am not a fan of churches, it looks like a nice church to me. Just beside the Church there is a very nice place to sit and have a cup of coffee or drink. It has a lovely atmosphere during warm summer days. One other thing I remember is the sea of flowers in front of this Church after the terrorist attack in Norway in 2011. I have never seen anything like that.
  • Oslo Cathedral cannot be blamed for being flamboyant or garish. On the contrary, its straight lines and minimal decorations make for a very quiet and thoughtful atmosphere, which is - in my view - pretty much what churches should be about.
