Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim

4.6
Home of the grave of Norway's patron saint, Nidaros Cathedral stands as one of the country's most important religious sites and one of the largest medieval buildings in Scandinavia. Original construction started in 1070 over the resting place of Saint Olaf, and the church took on elements of both Gothic and Romanesque architecture over the centuries. Stop by the sizable cathedral to admire its dual bell towers and intricate facade, replete with arches, windows, and pillars. Explore the vaulted interior and its large stained-glass window section. Don't miss the crypt, which contains a multitude of medieval-era headstones found within the church. Make Nidaros Cathedral a centerpiece of your Trondheim vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Trondheim attractions planning website.

  • Magnificent cathedral! One of the finest in the world. It is quite special with its darkness and the great west front. The wishing well is a must, my wish came true! (Bring cash). If you visit during summertime, take the tour up the stairs. Amazing.
  • The grandest of Norwegian churches. For some a place of pilgrimage and for others a marvel to behold. If you're in Trondheim, I would very much recommend having a look. Though.. Make sure you check opening hours online, it's open a few hours a day
