Find yourself amongst some of Panama’s most significant military ruins at Fort San Lorenzo, once part of a key defence system for transatlantic trade. Constructed by the Spanish Crown in the 17th and 18th centuries, the original fort dates back as far as 1595 and sits atop a cliff, overlooking a beautiful portion of the Caribbean Sea and the mouth of the Rio Chagres. Roam the UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy the national park’s surrounding scenery. The remaining fortifications are the best preserved in all of Panama and considered magnificent examples of the the period’s military architecture. There is little signage at the site, but guides are available. Plan to visit Fort San Lorenzo and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Colon attractions using our Colon trip tool .

The road to get there is terrible but the fort itself is fantastic. The place is well-maintained and easy to walk through and read up on the history. The views of the Chagres and ocean are amazing.
Great place to visit. You can feel the deep history while enjoy peace and beauty.
